2013 CHAMPION for Judges's Pick for "Best Grill Master"! Chef Ron Kerr developed an affinity for the kitchen at a young age, as he prepared dinner for his family nightly to help his working parents. His first job at a restaurant was by the time he was 13 starting out as a busboy. After attending the Florida Culinary Institute for chef school he has been executive chef at some notable restaurants; Marker 88 in the Keys, Georgie's Alibi in Wilton Manors, Sunset Beach in the Hamptons, all places that expanded an honed Ron's talents in the kitchen. His latest endeavor is the Bite Gastrotruck, with a menu of gourmet burgers, hand-cut fries and addicting milkshakes. This menu makes perfect sense as his burgers won the Riverwalk Burger Battle winner in 2010 and 2011 and grabbed a spot in the top 100 burgers in America.

Bennys On The Beach Jeremy Hanlon

While in school working towards his double major in finance and information systems, Jeremy developed a passion for art, utilizing food as his outlet. It was spurred on by the increasingly popular Food Network and fueled by a part time job he took at the best Italian restaurant in town. After six months in the financial world, Jeremy returned to his passion and entered culinary school part-time and accepted a full-time job at ZOE, a long time SOHO staple known for creative food with an Asian flare, won the MAYTAG ACCELLIS culinary competition in New York and was escorted to Napa Valley where he finished in the top 5 amongst 25 national competitors. Charlie Trotter, the celebrity Chef judge, was so impressed; he offered Jeremy a paid externship at his acclaimed restaurant, Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago. Upon his return to NYC, Jeremy accepted a position at Restaurant Daniel and fast tracked his way through every position in the kitchen. Following his four-year progression, Daniel sent Jeremy to Europe for 1 year, where he worked in Spain (Arzak in San Sebastian), France (Triosgros in Roanne and Guy Savoy in Paris) and Italy. Upon return to the States, Jeremy held the highly coveted position, Saucier, at Restaurant Daniel. One year later, Jeremy moved to Palm Beach to assist in the early stages of Daniel’s Café Boulud. It was here in South Florida; Jeremy launched, market-inspired meals delivered daily throughout Palm Beach County. Under Jeremy’s direction, a team of chefs prepared client-specific meals with fresh, local ingredients for an affordable price. It was at this time that Jeremy began working with local television stations in Palm Beach; ABC, NBC and CBS affiliates consistently feature his “fresh perspective” on food and cooking. He also appeared on A&E, Lifetime, HGTV and on the top rated Food Network show, CHOPPED. He was also awarded “Hot Chef” of the year by the National Restaurant Association in 2011 for his inspiring flavor combinations and adventurous use of ingredients. Jeremy’s next challenge came when he accepted the position as the International Director of Culinary and Menu Development for Carlson Restaurants. He worked with International restaurant groups in over 30 countries developing menus and kitchen operations that could deliver high quality “American food.” More recently, Jeremy joined a restaurant group and is currently the managing partner/chef of Benny’s on the Beach, Lake Worth Florida. Historically located on the Lake Worth pier, it has been a staple in the community, located directly on the beach for over 25 years. Using his fresh perspective to improve the ingredient quality and overall menu and experience for the Guests, while maintaining the beloved character and authenticity of the establishment is his focus.

McCoys Oceanfront Daniel Gerety

While preparing meals alongside his mother in the kitchen, Executive Chef Daniel J. Gerety grew up dreaming of culinary school and becoming a respected chef. Later in life, his aspirations came to life when attending the Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute in Annapolis, MD where he received a degree in culinary arts with a concentration in hospitality. During his time, Gerety worked at Annapolis Seafood Market as a prep and line cook, where he learned a range of pivotal skills from properly cleaning fish to various forms of preparation, and from filleting a 15-pound striped bass to a 200-pound swordfish. Growing up on the Chesapeake Bay was also an invaluable resource, which provided him with an inherent understanding of the true meaning of fresh local seafood. In 2004, Gerety was ready for a fresh start and accepted an opportunity as Sous Chef at Magellan’s Oceanfront Restaurant in Jacksonville, FL where he not only took on a new leadership role, but also acquired new skills such as menu development, scheduling, and budgeting. He later honed his expertise at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club in the position of Sous Chef, catering to high-end patrons. In 2010, Gerety returned to Annapolis where he took the helm as lead cook at Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Shortly after displaying his impressive leadership skills and his talents behind the fire, he was recognized and promoted to kitchen manager. Relocating to South Florida and working as a Sous Chef at Delray Beach’s The Office Gastropub, Gerety was introduced to modern cooking techniques, which broadened his skill set in the kitchen. His responsibilities also included maintaining food costs, controlling labor and scheduling and expediting menu items. With an impressive scope of experience and passion for the culinary arts, Gerety now holds the position of Executive Chef with the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Pompano Beach Resort & Spa. His responsibilities include overseeing all of property’s culinary outlets including McCoy’s Oceanfront to providing the highest level of service and premium food quality.

Jonathan Walko began his career with Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in 2005 while attending the University of Central Florida in Orlando, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management. He began in front of house operations as a Server Assistant and continued to move throughout the various roles including traveling as a Corporate Trainer. As a trainer, Jonathan assisted in spreading the Ruth’s Chris culture. After several restaurant openings, he began working in the kitchen in Winter Park, FL initially just to continue his knowledge. It was this switch however, that made him realize his passion for cooking and he decided to pursue a career within the kitchen. He became Sous Chef in Ft. Lauderdale in October 2011 and was then promoted to the Executive Chef position in Boca Raton in August 2013.

Kerri Powers is the Hospitality Supervisor of Esperanza Catering at Boca Helping Hands. Kerri is a second generation Florida native and as home grown as they come in Boca Raton- Rainbow of Love, Addison Mizner, Boca Middle School and St. Andrew’s School class of ’91 where she was also named an All-American springboard diving athlete. She pursued her AA at Florida State University on a diving scholarship and completed her BA in Public Management locally at FAU. Kerri’s love for the hospitality industry started early, at 16, juggling school and athletics she took a job at Outback Steakhouse in Boca Raton and never looked back! She became a trainer for not only the OSI organization but many other restaurant groups during her 20+ year career in the restaurant industry including 9 years as a General Manager. Kerri came to Boca Helping Hands as a volunteer in the kitchen on Wednesdays. In 2013, Kerri was hired as the Hospitality Supervisor of Esperanza Catering at Boca Helping Hands. She teaches a class of 12-15 people basic restaurant skills including their ServSafe Food Handling certification and TiPS alcohol awareness training and assists the students in obtaining employment. When not in the kitchen or behind a bar Kerri enjoys the beach, swimming and taking cooking classes. Her parents, brother and sister in law are all local. Family is the most important to her including her 8 month old Humane Society rescue kitty, Charley, who actually swims and plays fetch like a dog!
